How Does Drink Temperature Affect Us?

Published on:

December 8, 2018

Similar to the weather, most consumers are aware of their proclivity for both hot and cold beverages. Whether its the taste, reaction, or health benefits, everyone has an opinion about the drinks that suit their taste palate the best. Regardless of preferences, both hot and cold beverages have benefits that should be taken into consideration when forming taste and drink temperature preferences.

Hot Drinks

Hot drinks are rated higher for their health benefits and quality over cold beverages, no matter the climate. Even on a hot day, warm liquids generally soothe the system and improve digestion. Warm beverages, including warm water, activate your digestive system and stimulate blood flow to help you avoid stomachaches. Warm beverages are also a natural remedy for people suffering from nasal and throat congestion. As warm water increases blood flow to the tissues, it can act as an excellent natural aid to provide relief from pain. Warm drinks, specifically hot water and tea, are also credited with reducing acne and natural body toxins.

While warm beverages are highly rated for their health benefits across the board, they should be avoided during exercise and during periods of high exertion. As your core temperature is already high post workout, drinking cold water will lower your body temperature quicker and speed up the recovery process.

Cold Drinks

During exercise, drinking cold water can help keep your body from overheating and make your workout session more successful. This is because drinking cold water makes it easier for your body to maintain a lower core temperature. Drinking and even bathing in cold water may actually help you burn a couple of extra calories and increase your metabolism because your body has to work harder to maintain its core temperature.

While cold drinks are an American favorite, they are globally criticized as an unhealthy fad. The cold within a beverage needs to be heated by the body to room temperature in order to be digested. In doing so, cold drinks can increase congestion, trigger migraines, and increase indigestion. In ancient Chinese medicine, drinking cold water with hot food is seen as creating an internal imbalance; that’s why a typical meals in the Chinese culture is served with warm water or hot tea, instead. This belief is mirrored in several other cultures around the world.

As you can see, there are good reasons why drink temperature varies from beverage to beverage within different contexts. Pick a temperature that works for you and enjoy!
