Sipping on a warm mug of honey lemon water has often been contested as a healthy blend that boosts energy and leads consumers to better health. Further claims promote the drink as an elixir that can help melt fat, clear up acne, and “flush out” toxins from the body. But just how true is this remedy and how effective is the combination as a medical supplement?

Individually, both honey and lemon provide health benefits that improve overall well-being.

Honey has been consumed since the stone age and has been used in normal consumption and as medicine for many centuries. Honey has been consumed as a sugar substitute for processed sugar, in baking, and in drinks. In comparison, pure, unfiltered honey has been used to treat wounds and battle scars by ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman healers. Honey has been used in modern medicine to treat diabetic foot ulcers and has been proven to be a more effective treatment for healing burns.

Lemons and lemon juice are not only excellent sources of vitamin C, but they also contain compounds which may reduce the risk of heart disease and kidney stones in regular consumers. The plant-based compound “limonin” in lemons has been linked to the reduction of triglycerides and bad cholesterol, which improve overall heart health. Chronic kidney stones have been conventionally treated with potassium citrate; however, recent studies have shown that lemonade, limeade, and other citrus juices offer similar preventive benefits as conventional treatments.

Both lemon and honey have proven health benefits, as individual substances, that actively improve health and overall well-being. Combining the two ingredients with warm water can improve digestive health, can lessen the symptoms caused by the common cold, and boost energy throughout a long work day. Vitamin C provided by lemons can boost immune health and is linked to more sustained energy during the day. Raw honey consumption has been linked to increasing good stomach bacteria that helps keep your stomach healthy and in balance. Both honey and lemon have been popular remedies all on their own, but have been used to change what the world is drinking and help us live long and healthy lives.
